YMCA 2021 seminars deviated from our typical seminars- they were part of a 6 week summer program aiming to teach soft skills in accordance with weekly themes to engage YMCA students, with seminars twice a week.

8/11/2022: Public Speaking
Public speaking is an important skill for anyone looking to become a leader in the 21st century. Children practiced their public speaking skills through improvisation games, learning about tone, articulation and confidence, and eliminating the use of filler words. They developed short speeches and presented to each other.


8/9/22: Financial Literacy
Children learned the basics of financial literacy. This seminar was split up with one session for grades 1-6 and another for grades 7-8. All age groups learned about budgeting rules, taxation, and the basics of money.

1/15/22: Joke Telling/Humor
Children learned the basics of using humor by taking part in silly ad libs, improvised stories, puns, and one liners. They practiced delivering jokes, learned about comedic timing, learned about when jokes are appropriate, and using humor to make serious messages more digestible.

Children learned the fundamentals of conducting online research, an important skill for school and work life. They played fun games, and got to know each other through icebreakers. They actively participated and left the seminar with a greater understanding of how to conduct research

Students had fun playing jungle-related games and learning about common animals in jungles and rainforests. They drew posters and collaborated in projects relating to wildlife and jungles

Children practiced telling stories to each other, learned and practiced creating their own unique comics, and shared their favorite Disney characters, their favorite movie, etc..

Children learned about geography with a specific focus on the wild west and had fun learning about its wildlife and unique terrain. The kids had fun making art and cut-out boots.

Children learned about each other playing icebreaker games, and then discussed literature and their favorite books. They learned the basics of structuring a speech and public speaking delivery.

In this July 4th-focused seminar, kids played games relating to the USA and discussed their favorite things about America. They enjoyed things like Kahoot, Would You Rather, and Jeopardy.

Children learned the basics of saving, budgeting, taxes, and more. The seminar was highly productive as many kids walked away with a greater understanding of how they should deal with money. More info here.

Kids learned about the importance of conserving the Earth's ecosystem and wildlife. They appreciated both nature and our planet in this important seminar. They also had fun playing wildlife and Earth-related games.

In this seminar, kids learned about how they should properly use the internet. They learned how to properly research and write emails, skills that are useful in today's' world. More info here.

Kids got into the holiday spirit in this special, festive seminar. They played Christmas-related games and had fun participating in holiday discussions.

In this constructive seminar, children learned the importance of time management as well as effective time management techniques. This had fun introducing themselves and playing time-based games.

After introducing themselves, children worked together in an array of fun yet educational activities which emphasized collaboration.

Kids learned the process of problem solving and critical thinking, skills which are relevant both in and out of school. They tried to solve riddles, actively using the skills they learned during the seminar.
9/18/20: Interpersonal Skills
The children introduced and talked about themselves, and then learned basics of social skills and effective interaction. These learned skills were exercised in fun games after the lesson.
